To encourage kids to drink more water, we created Tummyfish. This virtual friend and storybook come together in a free mobile app that promotes healthy drinking in a fun way.
Kids learn to imagine Tummyfish is theirs to care for after a magical interactive moment in which the fish finds its way from the book into their belly. Tummyfish’s emotions and environment are affected by the child’s liquid intake. Excessive sugary drinks make Tummyfish unhealthy and unable to play, while water makes for a happy friend who rewards kids with digital toys and minigames.
The combination of book and app lets parents sit down with their kids and teach them about healthy drinking while encouraging parent-child bonding. Parents can monitor the liquid intake for each of their children and receive a reminder when this hasn’t been updated in the app. The more water kids drink, the more minigames they can play.
A Kid’s Game, Built for Parents
The combination of book and app lets parents sit down with their kids and teach them about healthy drinking while encouraging parent-child bonding. In the app two questions are asked that can be answered by the parent (and child together)
Did [child name] drink adequate amounts of water today? (answered by yes no)
How much water and sugary drinks did [child name] have today? (answered by a percentage slider)
After answering both questions the parent hands over the device to the child for the magic camera moment. The answers on the questions influence what the game environment will look like (high/low water and the amount of sugary bubbles present in the water)
We know every family is different. So we make sure every Tummyfish experience is catered to your lifestyle.
A parent can set up to three reminders per child. The notifications moments that are available are connected to “real life moments” (breakfast, lunch, before bedtime, etc) so that it is easy to fit in your schedule instead of needing to adjust your schedule. This makes the threshold for the app usage as low as possible encouraging the forming of habits.
Parents can monitor the liquid intake for each of their children and receive a reminder when this hasn’t been updated in the app. In the parent section the can see the statistics of the liquid intake for each day the app has been used.

Our target audience ranges from being unable to read to just learning. As such, sounds and visual expressions will play a key role in how they emotionally connect with their fish and intuitively learn what it needs and when. The soundtrack adjusts according to the state of the environment. When sufficient water has been drunk the soundtrack is upbeat. However when too many sugary drinks have been consumed the music slows down and is played in minor. The soundtrack adapts dynamically between these states when the buttons for "water" and "sugary drinks" are pressed in the freeplay section. Tummyfish also has a couple of facial expressions in which she communicates with the kids. - When she enters on a good day (positive answers to both questions) and receives a star she will smile and clap her fins in excitement -When swimming in clear water she will have a happy smiling expression -When swimming in sugary water she will look very sad (and makes sad sounds) -Tummyfish can also become tired. After 5 minutes of play time she will start to yawn and gradually start to swim slower. The frequency of yawning will increase until she ultimately falls asleep; ending the game sessions. When a child tries to play the game again immediately after that he/she will see Tummyfish sound asleep with zzzz’s floating above her in the character selection screen.Motivatie 2e categorie

To encourage kids to drink more water we’ve created Tummyfish. This virtual friend and storybook come together in a free mobile app that promotes healthy drinking in a fun way. Kids learn to imagine Tummyfish is theirs to care for after a magical interactive moment in which the fish finds its way from the book into their tummy. Tummyfish’s emotions and environment are affected by the child’s liquid intake. Excessive sugary drinks make Tummyfish unhealthy and unable to play, while water makes for a happy friend who rewards kids with digital toys and minigames. As water is central part of the experience it’s important that it feels as real as possible. To achieve this we’ve used a toolset in Unity called “soft bodies” with fixed orientation to maintain the integrity of the experience and avoid breaking the illusion. The state of the water also affects Tummyfish. When a child drank plenty of water the game environment will consist of high level clear water in which Tummyfish can swim around freely and play with all the toys available. However if the child drank sugary drinks, purple bubble will populate the water. Tummyfish will swim at a much slower speed when they navigate through the bubbles and is less fun to interact with. Although the answers given before the start of the game decide on what the initial game state will be like, we have included buttons for adding water and adding sugary drinks in the game mode as well. This way the child can see Tummyfish reacting positively towards water and becoming sad (and slow) when adding sugary drinks.Motivatie 3e categorie
