BEST ART DIRECTION:
Crap! I'm Broke's art style is influenced by Cubism and a hint of Art Deco. These art movements are heavily associated with business and the economic turbulence of the early 20th century. The architecture for New York's Empire State Building, for example, is in the Art Deco style and is strongly associated with work and business. Large businesses will buy Picasso paintings as a symbol of strong financial power. Using art movements with these connotations in a game about the everyman trying to get by in an economy fueled, day-to-day existence we felt was apt and perhaps a touch ironic.
Being broke and needing to get work is a phenomenon people all over the world are (unfortunately) familiar with and many have experienced first-hand. Arcane Circus set out to create a game depicting the abstract and globally occurring struggle of finding work and being perpetually broke in a manner that is relatable, regardless of the player's background or nationality. This is a large reason why the game’s style and setting is so abstract. This even extends into the protagonist's design, who was intentionally created to be no one specific race.
The art style of Crap! I'm Broke has been a much complimented element of the game and has led to several awards and nominations since its release. For example, artist Molly Heady-Carroll was nominated for Artist of the Year at the 2017 International Mobile Game Awards in San Francisco for her work on Crap! I'm Broke. The game was also shown at the Saatchi Gallery in London in 2017 by Google and was one of the first video games to ever be shown at the world-famous modern art gallery.

BEST GAME DESIGN:
Crap! I'm Broke: Out of Pocket is an Anti-Escapist game: it is not about becoming a millionaire or head of a company. You are just trying to get by and pay the bills, something many of us can relate to. Arcane Circus wanted to create a game that is not about one person’s struggles, but rather an abstract representation of the concept of being broke.

BEST MUSIC & AUDIO:
The striking Cubist art style of Crap! I'm Broke is mirrored by a Jazzy Lounge and Techno inspired soundtrack created by Amsterdam Underground artist Kimono.
The soundtrack heightens the metropolitan feel and accurately conveys the modern big city experience. This marries well with the game as an artistic critique on present day society. Players are drawn into the game by the approachable audiovisual style, giving the soundtrack an initial reel-in function. The soundtrack finds balance by taking the edge off the intentional hectic gameplay experience through the influence of lounge.
Kimono is a pan-media personality who stars in the animated web series Kimono & Chibby Chan and in the video game Kimono & Chibby Chan Save The World. He performs in-person in Amsterdam Underground band The Doppelgangers and has created music for award winning animation Ran, AV performance To The Worm There Is No Underground, and art-animation Inside The Dishwasher (for Siggraph).
Crap! I'm Broke the soundtrack is available to download on Bandcamp. It Includes 5 tracks from the game plus 4 bonus tracks as well as a song performed live by The DoppelGangers:

BEST CASUAL GAME:
Crap! I'm Broke: Out of Pocket defies the expectations of casual games by luring the player in with a deceptive approachable audiovisual design. Through its theme and gameplay, the player will soon realise that the game offers something more than just a "fun, casual game". The player tries to get by and pay the bills, something many of us can relate to. Arcane Circus wanted to create a game that is not about one person’s struggles, but rather an abstract representation of the concept of being broke.
