Underground is a strategic first person puzzle game for Nintendo Wii U that is best described as a cross-over between games like ‘Lemmings’ and ‘The Incredible Machine’. The player guides SWN-K, a mining robot turned private butler, and his powerful UNI drill vehicle through 5 varied and dangerous environments. SWN-K must build, cut, drill and weld routes that Will grant safe passage for his kin and his mistress and best friend Sari.

Motivatie: Underground took 5 years to build. It is a rigorous serious game design based on laparoscopic surgery, that promotes essential skills through fun game play. Its design came to fruition after complex studies that allowed The developers to utillize consumer grade hardware (the Nintendo Wii U console) with custom made dedicated tool shells and abundant production value. The game's design was done in iterations, with continuous feedback loops built in where the developers councillled hundreds of experienced surgeons and residents/surgeons in training in both the Netherlands and abroad. With validation studies to back up claims, the team went has created an affordable training tool of a couple of hundred Euro's that surpasses market leading simulators in precission that cost tens of thousands of Euro's. Technical prowess aside, it is the applied games' entertainment and production values that should be rewarded. After 5 years, the love and dedication for their work is apparent in every vibrant detail. From the beautiful hand-crafted animations, cut-scenes and painted textures to the inspirational level designs. It truely is a novel thing when an applied game can hold it's own as an entertainment game.
